KEEPING KIDS SAFE THIS SCHOOL YEAR
Post-pandemic, local members of the community are finding ways to help children overcome mental health hurdles and keep kids safe in schools. This is an exclusive Jen & Friends interview.
As West Valley children head back to school… “Jen & Friends” hosts a talk with Goodyear Police Department’s Sgt. Sean Tyler.
Sgt. Tyler served on the Teen Mental Health House Ad Hoc Committee to research and review how substance abuse, mental illness, and other factors may affect mental health in youth and potential teen suicide.
The committee identified potential solutions - including an app where children can anonymously report safety issues and seek clinical support… a recommendation that has raised eyebrows among parents.
“The idea isn’t to exclude parents, but, unfortunately, we have a lot of children who are in the State’s care or have no parents around at all. If they want to go out and get help, there’s no way for them to get that help without a parent,” notes Sgt. Tyler.

In our latest episode of Jen & Friends, we discuss parent concerns about teen mental health, licensure of school counselors, and children’s safety in the local schools.
The Goodyear Police Department has a phenomenal School Resource Officer program.
Sgt. Tyler talks about the successes and depth of SRO programs in Goodyear, Buckey and Avondale.
It was a honor speaking with Sgt. Tyler. And I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I have.
