REFRAMING THE MESSAGE: AZ SCHOOL COUNSELORS GETTING MIXED MESSAGES
Solid, independent, investigative journalism by concerned parents turns up the heat on how your children will be cared for in Arizona schools this year.
In May 2023, we discovered the Arizona School Counselors Association would be hosting controversial Dr. Carolyn Stone at its conference in June 2023. She’s chair of the American School Counselor Association Ethics Committee.
A group called “Courage is a Habit” shared a video of, “Carolyn Stone talking about taking a girl to get contraceptives against her mother’s wishes.” The group posted a link to the video… which as you can see, is now unvailable.
I followed up with my own investigation and found Dr. Carolyn Stone has been expressing her concerns about school district policies requiring parents to be notified of their daughters’ pregnancies as early as 2012.
‘ANGRY’ PARENTS PUSH BACK
Speaking of “angry parents”… it appears the Arizona School Counselors Association may be catching on to parents’ concerns… shifting the message to Arizona school counselors and their roles in the classroom.
When we first reported Dr. Stone’s upcoming presentation, the AzSCA introduced its conference, “The Legal and Ethical Complications of Working with Minors in Schools” in this way….
The school environment poses competing interests between a student’s need for confidentiality and the legal rights of parents…
Today, the website reads much differently.
The Arizona School Counselors Association now introduces its June 20-21, 2023 conference this way…
Legal and ethical issues in a school can be complicated. Develop a decision-making framework for analyzing and resolving these issues by applying case and statutory law, school board policy and the ASCA Ethical Standards. Through small-group and large-group discussion of actual court cases, focus on the need to consider your actions in context for each student and to understand the rights of parents/guardians to be the guiding voice in their children’s lives, especially in value-laden issues. Discuss areas such as duty to warn, privacy rights, responsibilities toward suicidal children, civil and criminal liability, academic advising, defamation, child abuse, case notes, educational records and malpractice. THE POWER OF PAYING ATTENTION
Why such a change?
This is my original report from May 2023 about Dr. Carolyn Stone’s upcoming visit. Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne weighed in.
THE NEXT GROUP TACKLING TEEN MENTAL HEALTH: A PANEL IN AZ CIVICS
In a Twitter thread last night, TheLegalProcess exposed, “AZ Center for Civic Leadership's coming seminar promoting the work of a Teen Mental Health ‘Committee’ that uses false data on child suicides to justify anti-parental right social policies in schools.”
By 8:30pm, Arizona Center for Civic Leadership blocked both of our Twitter accounts.
CivEx: Facing the Realities of Teen Mental Health is June 29th. You can register for free here. Former Goodyear City Councilmember Joanne Osborne leads the panel. As TheLegalProcess explains, “coming seminar promoting the work of a Teen Mental Health "Committee" that uses false data on child suicides to justify anti-parental right social policies in schools.”
Because the Goodyear Police Department will be represented on this panel, I have inquired if the stance of the study and proposed anonymous app are the position of the City of Goodyear. I will update you once I receive a response.
You might also recognize some of the other panelists, as well.
PARENTS RIGHTS IN JEOPARDY
Between the blocking and changing of messages from organizations like these, it’s clear independent journalism is not only necessary, but also vital for parents’ rights.
Many parents don’t want to co-parent with the government.
Stay informed and speak up.
These are the accounts I recommend for following this summer:
